'The Night Reveals'
20 x 30 inches, acrylics on canvas
This jellyfish was painted using fluorescent neon colors layered onto a deep ultramarine black background.
In daylight, it reads as a vibrant yet balanced painting, the neon tones are visible, expressive, and fluid, like my usual style of painting.
At night, under UV backlight, those same colors awaken. The fluorescents react instantly, glowing with intensity and movement, transforming the jellyfish into something electric, almost otherworldly.
I loved exploring how the same colors can behave so differently depending on the light, calm and composed by day, alive and radiant by night. Two worlds. One painting.
The Process:
This piece began on a pure white base to allow the fluorescent colors to breathe and glow freely. I worked in layers, first establishing the jellyfish form using soft transitions, then slowly building intensity with neon pinks, yellows, greens, and blues. The tentacles were painted with fluid, continuous strokes to keep the movement organic and natural. I intentionally varied the pressure and thickness to avoid symmetry and keep it alive. The fluorescent pigments were applied strategically, some areas heavily saturated, others left minima, so the UV light could activate depth rather than flatten the image. The final stage focused on contrast control: ensuring the artwork still works visually in normal light, not just under UV. An ultramarine-black background was used to enhance contrast, allowing the colors to stand out and bringing the piece together as a whole.
All neon pigments will glow under backlight.
This painting comes stretched and ready to hang. Feel free to reach out to me for any queries.
