'Keiko'
Keiko, a male killer whale, was captured in Iceland in 1979 and spent numerous years in captivity, and was made to perform in theme parks. Nevertheless, due to growing public concern and an advocacy campaign led by animal welfare organizations, concerted efforts were undertaken to rehabilitate him and facilitate his return to the wild.
In 2002, Keiko was released into a sea pen near Iceland to aid his acclimation to the wild. During this time, he exhibited the capability to catch live fish and interact with other wild orcas, though he still depended on human support for sustenance. Despite extensive attempts to reintegrate him completely, Keiko ultimately passed away in December 2003.
